Deck Cadet – Maritime Training Position

About the role

The Deck Cadet will support bridge and deck operations on a Norwegian Cruise Line vessel, gaining hands‑on experience in navigation, watch‑keeping and deck maintenance while working under the supervision of the Officer on Watch and Chief Officer.

Key responsibilities

• Assist with watch‑keeping duties, following the voyage plan and Captain’s orders, and report any incidents immediately.
• Perform deck maintenance tasks such as cleaning, rust removal, painting of hull, decks, masts, superstructure and tanks.
• Support navigation by maintaining up‑to‑date charts, preparing passage plans, daily position reports and ensuring bridge emergency equipment is compliant.
• Help with lifesaving equipment inspection, maintenance and repair in accordance with SOLAS and flag state regulations.
• Participate in safety and security training, assisting the Safety Officer and Security Officer in crew drills.

Required profile

• High school diploma or foreign equivalent; coursework in safety or environmental regulations.
• Intermediate to advanced English communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Ability to work in a multicultural environment and adapt to changing schedules.

Required skills

• Watch‑keeping and basic navigation procedures.
• Deck maintenance techniques including painting, rust scaling and mooring operations.
• Operation of bridge safety equipment (GMDSS radios, EPIRB, SART, pyrotechnics).
• Knowledge of safety management systems (SMS) and environmental protection policies.
