Staff Captain - Cruise Ship

About the role

The Staff Captain is the second in command of a Norwegian Cruise Line ship and head of the Deck Department. He is expected to know the Master's duties and be ready to take command if necessary, and to assist the Master with operational issues and safety matters. The position is open to Bahamian-registered ships.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure the Master's instructions are followed and liaise with department heads on improvements
• Oversee safety, security (SSO for ISPS/MTSA), pollution prevention and fire-fighting equipment (except engine room)
• Assign duties to Bridge Officers and supervise the Deck Crew through the Chief Officer, Boatswain and Carpenter
• Conduct regular inspections of the vessel, including galley, laundry and exhaust ducts, and drive corrective actions
• Supervise exterior and interior maintenance, including ballast, fresh water, void spaces and laundry tanks
• Act as the ship's USPH coordinator, oversee water quality records in jacuzzis and pools, and review misconduct reports
• Train the Chief Officer, support the Safety Officer in crew training and emergency duty assignments, and act as STCW course assessor on Bahamian ships
• Manage the AMOS maintenance system within budget, maintain logbooks and reports, and ensure a safe tender operation
• Link the Crew Welfare Committee with ship management and manage the medical facility logs and drug counts

Required profile

• Unlimited Master's license and a recognized maritime education degree
• Pass the Norwegian Cruise Line Environmental Officer course and stand in for the Environmental Officer briefly
• Intermediate to advanced English, and intermediate to advanced skills in another language (German, Spanish, French or Italian) preferred
• Ability to work in a multicultural environment and adapt to schedule changes

Required skills

• Intermediate to advanced ECDIS
• Intermediate Microsoft Word, Excel and Fidelio strongly preferred
• Knowledge of SMS, STCW-95, SOLAS and IMO
